Writing your CV in English
You need an English CV when the job ad is in English or the company works internationally. It isn't a word-for-word translation of your Georgian CV: the wording, the dates and even some sections are written differently.
When you need a CV in English
- The job ad is in English. A simple rule: write your CV in the language of the ad.
- The company is international, or HR and the hiring manager don't read Georgian.
- You're applying abroad, or remotely to a foreign company.
- The ad asks for both: some employers want both versions.
If the ad is in Georgian, send a Georgian CV, even to a big company. Your English shows in the languages section.
It isn't a translation
A word-for-word translation of a Georgian CV sounds odd in English. English CVs have their own habits:
- Bullets start with a past-tense verb and no pronoun: "Managed", "Built", "Grew". Not "I was responsible for".
- Short sentences. A full stop at the end of a bullet is optional, but be consistent.
- Numbers as digits: "Grew sales by 40%", "a team of 4".
| Georgian | Poor translation | Good English |
|---|---|---|
| ვმართავდი კომპანიის სოციალურ ქსელებს. | I was managing the social networks of the company. | Managed the company's social media. |
| პასუხისმგებელი ვიყავი ანგარიშგებაზე. | I was responsible for the reporting. | Prepared weekly and monthly reports. |
| გაყიდვები 40%-ით გავზარდე. | I increased the sales on 40%. | Grew sales by 40%. |
Job titles and companies
- Job title: use what the role is called in English, not a literal translation. "მთავარი სპეციალისტი" may be "Senior Specialist"; "განყოფილების უფროსი" is "Head of Department".
- Company type: "შპს" is "LLC" and "სს" is "JSC". Spell the name in Latin letters the way the company does itself (on its website or LinkedIn).
- Public bodies: "სსიპ" is "LEPL" (Legal Entity of Public Law).
Education
- ბაკალავრი = Bachelor's degree (BA or BSc), მაგისტრი = Master's degree (MA or MSc).
- The university's official English name: "Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University".
- GPA only if it's high and matters for the job.
Dates, phone and name
- Dates: "Mar 2022 – Present" or "03/2022 – Present", the same way throughout.
- Phone with the country code: +995 555 12 34 56.
- Your name in Latin letters as in your passport, so it matches every document.
- City: "Tbilisi, Georgia". The country belongs on an English CV.
Language levels
Use the European scale (A1 to C2) or words: Native, Fluent, Intermediate, Basic. For Georgian: "Georgian (native)". If you have a certificate (IELTS, TOEFL), add the score.
Photo and personal details
Most international companies don't expect a photo or personal details (age, marital status) on an English CV. A one-column CV without a photo is the safest choice here: CV templates.
A Georgian and an English CV from the same experience
The easiest way is to describe your experience once and get your CV in whichever language the job needs. In Vailo you pick the CV's language: the same experience gives you a Georgian CV or an English one, each tailored to the specific job. More in how to tailor your CV to a job.
